NZ HERALD: A successful, wealthy businessman who tried to kill the wife of his business partner believed he could read minds.

Martin Victor Lyttelton, who lived in a $3 million Portland Rd home in Remuera and drove a Mercedes, was more mad than bad, a court was told last week.

Lyttelton was jailed for five years, 11 months by Justice Edwin Wylie in the High Court at Auckland on charges of attempted murder, aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm.

The 52-year-old shot Colleen Ord (then Colleen Fenton) during a frenzied home invasion involving her husband Richard Ord, Lyttelton’s former business partner.

Paul Davison, Lyttelton’s QC, argued for a reduced sentence, saying Lyttelton was a law-abiding businessman who had suffered a mental illness.

The judge said psychiatric reports presented to him before sentencing referred to Lyttelton suffering narcissistic personality traits, grandiose ideas and he thought he had acquired the ability to read people’s minds, which he found enjoyable but also troubling because he thought he was going mad.
