QUEENSLAND is home to a newly discovered flesh-eating plant so rare that its location will be kept secret to protect it from collectors.
The plant, found somewhere in the north of Cape York, is one of the most exciting botanical discoveries since that of the Wollemi Pine – a surviving tree from the time of the dinosaurs found in the Blue Mountains in 1994.
James Cook University ecologist Charles Clarke, who found the carnivorous plant, yesterday said the exact site was being kept secret to deter fortune hunters.
Due to its size, the newly found Cape York species – which grows like a vine to about 25cm high – is not as voracious as some of its bigger cousins. It eats mostly small insects, ants, rats, and an occasional lizard.
